The real heart of Moscow and the whole of Russia. The size of the Red Square is 24 750 m², it is 330 meters long and 75 meters wide. The square is а pedestrian zone, vehicular traffic here was banned in 1963. An exception is made for the car of the Defense Minister opening the parade on the 9th of May, the Victory Day.

    The building is located on the north side of the Red Square and was constructed specially for the museum exhibition, which is a rare event for Moscow. The museum was founded in 1872, and was open for visitors in 1883. The basis of the collection was formed by the exhibits related to the Crimean War 1852-1956.

    The Resurrection Gate
    The Red Square

    The double gate connects the Historical Museum with the adjacent building. Part of the museum exposition is located inside the gate. One of the previous names of the construction is The Lion Gate. It was called this way because of the lions, which were presented to Ivan the Terrible.

    Kilometer zero
    The Red Square

    In front of the Resurrection Gate there is a sign «Kilometer Zero of the Russian roads». The tourists have chosen this place to throw coins as a sign of their desire to return to Moscow. Disappoint you at once: in reality the kilometer zero, the real point is located in the center of the Red Square in the middle of the line connecting the department store GUM and the Mausoleum.

    The Red Square

    During the reign of Catherine II, the first project of the shopping arcade at this location was made by the famous architect Quarenghi. But the building was lost in the fire of 1812.

    St. Basil’s Church

    The cathedral was built in the years 1555-1561 on the order of Ivan the Terrible to commemorate the capture of Kazan. So many unique construction tricks were used that a legend was made saying: Tsar Ivan the Terrible ordered to blind all church creators, so that nowhere else could ever appear a building like The St. Basil’s Church.

    The mummified body of Vladimir Lenin is stored in the tomb. To prevent complete decomposition of the body a special scientific research laboratory was organized. The scientists of the laboratory also carried out the embalming of many world leaders - Dimitrov, Ho Chi Minh, Kim II-Sung.

    The Red Square

    This memorial cemetery near the Kremlin wall was founded after the Great October Revolution for burying prominent revolutionaries. Among them Sverdlov, Frunze and Stalin, whose body had been taken out of Mausoleum and was buried at the Kremlin wall as well.

    The Red Square

    Тhe tower with a chiming clock. For a long time men were not allowed to pass through with their heads covered. Legend says that near the tower Napoleon was unable to hold his hat on the head.
